Nation and Election: Pray with Urgency

Conventions... debates ... Election Day. As we entered this election season, God burdened my heart to pray for our nation and this election with greater urgency. There is much at stake.

Beginning 75 days before the election, I started posting Prayer reminders on my Facebook page and Twitter. I need these reminders, even if no one else prays!

But I know that others are praying. Thousands attended a GOP prayer rally cosponsored by CitizenLink, Salem Communications, and Generation Letter in Tampa prior to the Republican National Convention. More than 2,000 people gathered at the River Church to pray not only for the RNC and upcoming elections, but also for the nation in general, and especially for a return to the truth principles of scripture.

CitizenLink Executive Director Tom Minnery, one of the featured speakers, said, "In a free country, such as ours, moral strength is absolutely important because people cannot stay free unless they have a strong understanding of what is right and what is wrong. Those principles come from the Bible. They come from nowhere else. Our Founding Fathers recognized that, and it was up to us to remind people that is where our freedom starts. It starts from godly principles found in the Bible."

Bishop Harry Jackson prayed for a national revival. Former presidential candidate Michele Bachmann told those gathered, in light of the threat of Hurricane Isaac, "There is a hurricane in a spiritual form. And we need the Lord Jesus."

I'm glad that these men and women of God gathered to pray, but it will take far more than one day of prayer to shake the nation and insure not only the liberties we've grown to love in America, but also to call our nation to the freedom found only in Christ.

At least one national group understands that this is an ongoing call. OneCry ~ a Nationwide Call for Spiritual Awakening ~ is, in the words of its organizers, "a movement of believers who are urgently crying out to God to revive His church and transform the culture. It isn't an organization, program, or even an event."

So what is it? "It's a movement of like-minded people, churches, and organizations who agree that our nation needs a dramatic turnaround ~ but not the kind that comes from different politics, more education, or a better economy. Instead, it's a cry to God for spiritual transformation of our hearts, homes, and communities."

In light of our astounding national debt, weakening military, cultural decay, and corrupt political scene ... we must pray. We can create political platforms and design agendas to move the country forward ... but God is our only hope. We can preach great messages and offer countless outreach programs ... but God is our only hope. We can make personal resolutions and exert our very best will power ... but God is our only hope.

The Psalmist said of God, "My hope and expectation are in you" (Psalm 39:7b), but in the Psalms we also read about our responsibility ~ to be brave and strong as we wait on and expect the Lord to work (Psalm 27:14).

Will you join me in prayer for our nation, church, and in our personal lives ... that God will open our eyes that we might turn to Him, not in a superficial way but in a desire for deeper intimacy, quicker grace-motivated obedience, and Spirit-controlled spiritual transformation.

Pray with Urgency! God is our only hope.
